BIHTER YÖREOGLU (ZIYAGIL):

WHERE WOULD SHE BE TODAY, IN 2018?

by Eylül Göktaş

*The following article is based off the show by Ay Productions only and has no relation to Halid Ziya Uşaklıgil’s original novel.

Imagine a show which entails the never-ending dilemma of humans, in all possible life situations: poverty, luxury, love, forbidden love, passion, adultery and semi-incest. Aşk-ı Memnu was THAT show, and it still remains one of the most iconic Turkish TV shows up to date, some even say it’s the best (I do.). It’s translated into English as “Forbidden Love”, but I prefer not to use that title because it merely conveys the emotions “Aşk-ı Memnu” radiates, but yes, Forbidden Love is the literal translation of the title of the show if you want to know. Even if you haven’t seen the show, you probably somewhat have an idea of the plot, since it’s an inseparable part of Turkish culture, and its referenced widely, everywhere, in all sorts of entertainment media. If you’re not familiar with Turkish culture, you can think of Aşk-ı Memnu as the Breaking Bad, Friends, The X Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer of Turkish TV, although not one bit similar in terms of genre, you are about to find out what goes on in the most iconic Turkish TV show of all time. If you’ve seen the show you can just skip the next two paragraphs.

Recap

To start with, I have to mention that the show is layered with countless plots and storylines of side characters and as much as all of them are equally entertaining, I can only summarize it to some extent in this article. So, this is how the story goes: Bihter Yöreoğlu is a young woman, the daughter of a rich man who lost his reputation and money because of gambling and later on died of a heart attack when he found out about his wife’s, Bihter’s mother’s, adultery. When the father, Melih Yöreoğlu died, Bihter, her mother Firdevs and her sister Peyker had to pay all of his debts, and they were no longer rich. They were actually poor, to be honest, poor to the point where they had to sell their family house next to the Bosphorus, “yalı” in Turkish, and Firdevs, a woman of approximately 50, considered remarrying to solve her monetary problems. Adnan Ziyagil, a rich widow of approximately 50 too, was obviously a catch for Firdevs but when Adnan announced that he wanted Bihter’s hand in marriage instead of Firdevs’, she went along with it. It didn’t matter that she married Adnan or not as long as she could regain her social status in the upper-class, and she could with her daughter’s marriage. Everything with their marriage was going fine until Bihter developed a romantic relationship with Behlül Haznedar, Adnan’s niece, but not really because Behlül’s father was close friends with Adnan before his death so Adnan took him under his wing and became Behlül’s “uncle”. Moving on, while Bihter was cheating on Adnan with Behlül, Adnan’s daughter, Nihal, developed a crush on Behlül which later on transformed into an obsession. During all this, Behlül found out about Nihal’s feelings towards him, and they somehow decided to get married because Behlül didn’t want Nihal to be upset. Bear in mind, these two were raised as cousins, and no one really understood how they came to this decision but everyone went along with it since Nihal is a spoilt dramatic brat who faked fainting whenever things didn’t go her way but I could write a whole other article about that. So Behlül getting together with Nihal meant he had to stop seeing Bihter, because Nihal would “die from misery” if she ever found out. That’s what happened eventually, someone died from misery but unfortunately it wasn’t Nihal, it was Bihter. On Nihal and Behlül’s wedding day, Bihter shot herself just after the creepy butler, Beşir, who knew about Behlül and Bihter’s affair, told Adnan about them. Following this whole incident, all of the characters were a mess, really.

Just to summarize what happened after that day: The wedding was cancelled, of course and Nihal was admitted to a psych ward, Behlül became homeless, Beşir died, half of Firdevs’ face was paralyzed, Adnan, Bülent (Adnan’s son), Matmazel (Nihal and Bülent’s nanny) and Nihal moved into a new house. Bihter died too, obviously, but what if she hadn’t?

Bihter Yöreoğlu (Ziyagil) in 2018: What if she lived?

The reason Ziyagil, the surname which Bihter took after her marriage to Adnan, is in parenthesis is not hard to guess: Obviously, Adnan and Bihter would get divorced and after their divorce, them and their families would never interact ever again. Behlül is not included in Adnan’s family anymore as you can imagine, but Bihter would never get together with Behlül if this whole thing drew her to the point of killing herself.

We know Bihter graduated from UCLA and that she has contacts in Los Angeles, so she would probably move to the US with the alimony she’s receiving from Adnan. While rebuilding her world, she would take a turn on fashion and designing, as we can interpret from her iconic looks throughout the show. The following are a few fan favorites:

She was THE fashion icon at the time the show was airing, and when I say fashion icon, it’s not just people adoring her outfits. The clothing she wore were from real shops, it wasn’t designed or produced just for the show, and they were all sold out after Bihter wore it in an episode. If people couldn’t find the outfit from a store, they made their tailors sew it for them. Everyone wanted to dress like Bihter, and adopted her sense of fashion.

Taking her UCLA diploma and her reputation in fashion into consideration, she would start designing in LA after she was done with the divorce, leaving everything behind. She would start her own high fashion brand called “MELIH”, the name of her father whom she loved very much, and an ode to her mother and her sister, as they were called by the derogatory nickname “Melih Bey Team” after his death. Soon after starting her brand, she would gain immediate success and spread her name worldwide, becoming one of the IT high fashion brands. She would be featured anywhere and everywhere, and make it to Forbes’ Top 100 Self-Made Richest Women list. Bear in mind Nihal is still in an asylum while she does all of this, and Behlül is homeless, so, Bihter won. Anyway, this is where Bihter Yöreoğlu would be in 2018. She wouldn’t get remarried since her career has just kicked off, but to find the love she never got from Adnan or Behlül, she would get remarried to a French fashion photographer and have a daughter at some point in her life. At least this is how I picture her when I think to myself, what if she didn’t die? If you were involved with the show as much as I am, you have probably asked this question to yourself too. Whether you think she would build a career in fashion or that she would take revenge on Behlül for what he did to her, we can all agree on one sentence, 5 words: SHE DIDN’T DESERVE TO DIE.
