The Gender Gap at Amazon:
Women Excluded from STEM
Dağhan Erbil
In recent years, with the increase of women in STEM fields, discrimination and gender inequality issues have erupted in many world giant companies. There have been allegations that women working in STEM roles in companies that are under Amazon's umbrella have been subjected to gender inequality. Although Amazon is one of the world’s leading tech giants and the world's fifth most valuable company, it seems that women are not allowed to play a role in the company as actively as men and are excluded in various places and are not paid equally.
Amazon's workforce approach means that women working in STEM fields mainly in technical roles like software engineering and data science are in sight of prejudice in the company. These unethical approaches result in women being paid less than men in the same field and rank, and them being not promoted even if they perform better.
Lawsuits against the tech giant for unequal pay and benefits shows that in a hostile work environment, gender discrimination have been mounting over the past few years, highlighting the magnitude of Amazon's problem. The lack of voice for women in leadership positions makes it even more difficult for women to work in STEM related areas.
Although there is an effort in the STEM field to eliminate this discriminatory behavior and gender gap at Amazon and other companies., it is inevitable that it will take more time to solve this problem given the degree of the lawsuits and accusations. As long as there is no incentive for women to work in STEM fields, discrimination will continue to be seen even in companies like Amazon.
