Faded Leaves
Zeynep Alya Yıldız
“I was falling into a wide space. An infinity. There was nothing else. Just me and my defeat. I was lonely and cold. It was such a long journey, so I thought I wouldn’t reach the ground. In fact, I was scared to get hurt. I know, everyone needs to fall on the ground to get up. However, I wasn’t ready to start all over again.”
A leaf.
It was such a beautiful, orange leaf. The whole park was filled with fallen leaves which were a combination of yellows, reds, browns, and, yes, oranges. But you don’t have to be different to be called special. It was special. I smiled with envy, then stepped on it. I heard its screams as it was crushed under my feet. But I had to do it. I learned that nothing can be perfect in this cruel world, especially me. I failed. Yes, I failed. First time in my life. My mind was full of memories of success, but no, none of them was considerable anymore. Just a little mistake ruined everything. He ruined everything. I quickened my pace for fear of seeing his face. I wasn’t ready to face him. I didn’t want to congratulate him.
Another leaf.
But now it is red, glowing with anger as if it would burn anyone who came across it. I stepped on it. It shouted in pain and anger. I didn’t care. The only person who should be angry was me.
Then I saw him. He was in the middle of a crowd. Laughing and thanking everyone. After seeing that, I really accepted it. He won. For the first time, I lost.
But, will people forget him too? Like they forgot me.
Will anyone beat him? Like he beat me.
Maybe someone will… Will anyone remember me?
A leaf.
This time, it was brown. Full of dirt and full of mistakes. I stepped on it. It couldn’t even shout, just a little crack. So weak, so helpless. I don’t want to be brown. I don’t want to fall. I just want to stop time. Because the ground is hard to live in and full of regrets.
A yellow leaf.
A dirty yellow. Full of jealousy, so childish. I stepped on it. It didn’t even try to scream. It was hopeless, and alone. I finally understood. Life is going on. No one lives in a world full of oranges, reds, or browns. Mistakes are being made. There are too many regrets to count. Many people are falling but more people are getting up.
A pink leaf, some whites, and a few blues. Then I saw a different one. It was such a beautiful, green leaf. The whole park was full of leaves, but only one of them was green. I didn’t step on it. I couldn’t. Because all day, I was looking for this leaf. Looking for growth. Starting over again. But mainly, I was looking for the power I needed to stand up. And the power to be the winner again.
At the core of our existence is the human experience, a mosaic of emotions and experiences that shape who we are. Life is not a linear path but a series of interconnected moments, each influencing the next in ways we cannot always anticipate. This unpredictability adds depth and richness to our stories, making them uniquely ours.
In a world that often seeks simplicity and order, the beauty of life lies in its complexity. The ups and downs, the triumphs and tribulations, all contribute to the symphony of our existence. It is through facing challenges that we discover our strengths, and in moments of joy, we find reasons to celebrate. Life's complexity allows us to evolve, learn, and grow into the individuals we are meant to become.
However, embracing the complexity of life requires a willingness to navigate the unknown. It demands that we let go of the illusion of control and accept that uncertainty is an inherent part of the human experience. In our quest for understanding, we must be open to the idea that answers may not always be clear and that ambiguity is a canvas upon which we can paint our interpretations.
Moreover, the diversity of human experiences adds complexity to the collective narrative. Different cultures, perspectives, and ideologies create a vibrant tapestry of humanity. We gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and others at the intersection of these diverse threads. The richness of life emerges from our ability to appreciate and learn from this diversity, which fosters empathy and connection.
In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information and the speed at which life unfolds. However, amidst the chaos, there is an opportunity to savor the complexity and find meaning amid uncertainty. In the quiet moments of reflection, we can appreciate the intricacies of our journey and the interconnectedness of all living things.
Life, as we know it, is a grand tapestry that we each contribute to and shape in our way. By embracing the complexity of our existence, we can navigate the challenges with resilience, celebrate the joys with gratitude, and weave a story that is uniquely our own. Let us revel in life's unpredictability, for it is in its complexity that we find the true essence of our humanity.
